OPINION | Surrender Donald (Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?)

In 1939, a house landed on a witch, and a starry-eyed youngster found out there is no place like home. Exactly 80 years later, a house will proverbially land on a president, as 40 Democrats will take their seats in the House of Representatives in an effort restore courage, wisdom and heart to the government. Trending on twitter is the latest hashtag #TrumpResign

The journey has been long, a relentless and unapologetic twister from Hurricane Maria to Trump’s refusal to hold the Saudis culpable in the death of Washington Post writer, Jamal Khashoggi. Far too many victims to mention. Children separated from their parents at the USMexico border under Trump policy, ostensibly remain orphaned during this festive season. Do they know it’s Christmas time at all? The tales will make you weep. Be thankful if you are spending time with your family—for better or for worse, you have someone to remind you that you belong.

As if hubris had thrown the bucket of water on Trump, he and his administration have begun to dissolve—Ryan Zinke, General John Kelly, Secretary of Defense James Mattis, and ISIS special envoy Brett McGurk. The exodus has been unprecedented, as well as the controversy associated with each and every one of these top-level departures. As the nation enters the first week of the government shutdown, this leaves Trump all alone in the White House.

Stock markets fall like the tears of the misplaced children, in the worst December since the Great Depression. The sudden announcement of the withdrawal of American troops from Syria gives ISIS ample opportunity to regroup. There is no reasonable explanation for the decision, nor a coherent plan.  As we approach the new year, Trump continues his isolationist policy abroad and at home, now abetted by the few friends he has left—Fox and Friends, and his base. His only wall is self-imposed, transparent at best as the president tries in vain to fend off the numerous State and Federal investigations, including Russia, and the dissolution of the Trump Foundation under Court supervision.

Just over a week from now, the Democrats in the House will change the landscape. At last, there will be “parents” in the room, and most Americans may be able for the first time in years to say, “There’s no place like home,” and mean it.
